NTT Medical Center Tokyo is run directly by NTT East, Co. therefore, most of the staff here are the employees of the company. It used be exclusively for the employees of the corporation and the affiliates, but it’s been open for everyone and has served for various patients since 1986. So, these days it’s neither an exclusive corporate hospital nor a profit-oriented medical institution. This is a hospital serving for the regional community proven by a fact that one third of the patients, including inpatients and outpatients both, are from Shinagawa-ku (ward) and three fourths are from other adjoining wards in Tokyo. It also proves that this hospital is playing a critical role in the community healthcare in the region. Furthermore, it has been designated as a regional Core Cancer Hospital and a Tokyo Disaster Base Hospital. In order to fulfil the responsibilities, we are making constant efforts in coordinating with the reginal community and participating in the disaster drills.
Our hospital philosophy can be summarized as follows: “We are dedicated to contributing to happiness of all the people visiting us and working in the hospital, through medicine provided, which makes us one of the symbols of social contributions made in the name of NTT East.” At the same time, we constantly make efforts to implement medical safety and to provide quality medicine, as these are the requirements by the JCI (Joint Commission International), one of the international organizations for medical function evaluation. What we are especially focused on daily is in accordance with the IPSG (International Patient Safety Goals), namely “strict identity check of each patient,” “good communication,” “reliable drug administration,” “safe surgery,” “anti-infectious disease measures,” and “prevention of fall and tumble.” Therefore, everyone visiting this hospital can feel quite safe while receiving their treatments.
In addition to our constant efforts to help patients with various diseases, we also try to prevent diseases and detect them at the early stages by building a full health check center. It is forecasted that the generations older than 75 years of age will account for about 20% of the entire population in Japan in the near future, while the low birthrate tendency will continue accelerating. It means that we will have to face a difficulty with the “super-aging society,” which nobody in the world has experienced before. Based on the fact as such, the NTT Medical Center Tokyo should realize its mission to contribute to the region, and all the staff working here are determined to fulfill it.
The motto of the NTT Medical Center Tokyo is: “We provide medicine to connect with people and the regional community.” As it says, we value coordination with the region to provide many patients with quality medicine.
In 1952, the Kanto Teishin Hospital, the predecessor of the NTT Medical Center Tokyo, was founded in Gotanda, Tokyo. In those days, the hospital used to be only for the employees and their families of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation, the predecessor of NTT. However, in 1986 when the hospital was designated as a health insurance medical institution, it became open for everyone. Because of the history, it is still run directly by the NTT East and most of the staff working here are the corporate employees.
“We are dedicated to contributing to happiness of all the people visiting us and working in the hospital, through medicine provided, which makes us one of the symbols of social contributions made in the name of NTT East.” This is a statement firmly made as our mission. Under this statement, we are always trying to satisfy our patients and their families through providing specialized quality medicine as a regional core hospital, facilitating smooth coordination with the regional family doctors for functional allocation.
The characteristics of the NTT Medical Center Tokyo are summarized as follows: “We treat a variety of diseases as a regional general hospital,” “We practice team medicine consisting of multiple professions in order to treat our patients comprehensively,” “We try to provide less invasive therapies (therapies not giving too much physical impact) as much as we can,” and “We promote globalization in medicine.” We constantly make efforts to implement medical safety and to provide quality medicine, as these are the requirements by the JCI (Joint Commission International), one of the international organizations for medical function evaluation. What we are especially focused on daily is in accordance with the IPSG (International Patient Safety Goals), namely “strict identity check of each patient,” “good communication,” “reliable drug administration,” “safe surgery,” “anti-infectious disease measures,” and “prevention of fall and tumble.” The low birthrate tendency is rapidly accelerating in Japan. In the middle of the “super-aging society,” we are trying to achieve the world where everyone feels safe in living and can receive the merits from the best medicine.
